Thomas Percy (13 April 1729 – 30 September 1811) was Bishop of Dromore, County Down, Ireland. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III of the United Kingdom. [577] Percy, 1) Thomas, engl. Dichter, geb. 13. April 1728 in Bridgeworth (Shropshire), wurde 1756 Pfarrer zu Wilby in der Grafschaft Northampton und starb 30. Sept. 1811 als Bischof von Dromore in Irland. Durch seine Sammlung älterer englischer und schottischer Gedichte, besonders Volkslieder (»Reliques of ancient English poetry«, Edinb. 1765, 3 Bde., u. ö.; genauer Neudruck von A. Schröer, 2 Bde., Heilbr. 1889 u. Weim. 1893), hat er höchst anregend auf die englische und deutsche Dichtung eingewirkt. Die nach ihm benannte Percy-Society, begründet 1840, gab bis 1852: 94 Bände altenglischer Dichtungen etc. heraus. Vgl.
