Vita

Rosmarie Waldrop wurde 1935 in Kitzingen am Main geboren. Ihr Vater war Joseph Sebald. 1954 lernte sie Keith Waldrop kennen, der als amerikanischer Soldat in Kitzingen stationiert war. Sie studierte Literaturwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft in Würzburg, Freiburg und Aix/ Marseille. 1958 siedelte sie in die USA über und heiratete Keith Waldrop. Sie setzte ihr Studium in Michigan fort und wurde 1966 zur Dr.phil. promoviert. Seit den späten sechziger Jahren lebt sie in Providence, Rhode Island. Zusammen mit Keith Waldrop ist sie Verlegerin und Herausgeberin (Burning Deck Press). Der Verlag gehört zu den einflußreichsten und innovativsten Kleinverlagen der Vereinigten Staaten. Beide geben die Zeischrift Burning Deck heraus, die Keinzelle ihres Verlags.


Werk

In den späten sechziger Jahren begann sie eigene Gedichte auf Englisch zu veröffentlichen. Sie veröffentlichte Dutzende Bände mit Gedichten, Prosa, Essays und Übersetzungen. Anfang der siebziger Jahre verbrachte sie ein Jahr in Paris und lernte dort die führenden Avantgardeautoren kennen, darunter Claude Royet-Journoud, Anne-Marie Albiach und Edmond Jabès, die ihr eigenes Werk beeinflußten und die sie ins Englische übersetzte. 2006 wurde sie in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt. Die französische Regierung ehrte sie als Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. 2008 erhielt sie den PEN Award for Poetry in Translation für die Übersetzung von Fachsprachen I-IX von Ulf Stolterfoht. Ihre Übersetzungen deutscher und französischer "experimenteller" Autoren beeinflußten den poetologischen Diskurs in den Vereinigten Staaten.

"In crossing the Atlantic my phonemes settled somewhere between German and English. I speak either language with an accent. This has saved me the illusion of being the master of language. I enter it at a skewed angle, through the fissures, the slight difference. I do not "use" the language. I interact with it. I do not communicate via language, but with it. Language is not a tool for me, but a medium infinitely larger thatn any intention. What will find resonance is out of my hands. If the poem works (and gets the chance to be read) it will set off vibrations in the reader, an experience with language --with the way it defines us as human beings." ("Thinking of follows")
