Okt.) 1838, widmete sich erst dem Staatsdienst, trat dann (1796) in den Militärdienst über und wurde im Türkenkriege zum Stabshauptmann befördert. 1808 übernahm er die Leitung eines Erziehungshauses für Kinder armer Edelleute in Poltawa, 1827 die des dortigen Armenhauses, dem er bis 1835 vorstand. K. hat die lebende kleinrussische Volkssprache zur Schriftsprache erhoben und ist somit als der Begründer der kleinrussischen Nationalliteratur zu bezeichnen. Sein wichtigstes Werk ist die von überschwenglichem Humor sprudelnde Travestie von Vergils »Äneide« (Petersb. 1798 u. ö.; letzte Ausg, das. 1890), womit er die durch den Verlust ihrer Freiheit heruntergekommenen Kosaken aufzurütteln beabsichtigte und die moralischen Gebrechen der niedern Volksklasse schonungslos züchtigte. Dagegen hob er in den dramatischen Sittenbildern: »Natalka Poltawka« (»Natalie von Poltawa«, 1819) und »Moskal&#039; čariwnyk« (»Der Soldat als Zauberer«) den moralischen Gehalt der Volkssitten hervor und gab damit einen Beweis seiner echt volkstümlichen Gesinnung.
